Edwin Hubble was an American astronomer (born November 20, 1889) whose discoveries transformed astronomy into modern cosmology. By identifying that many “nebulae” were actually entire galaxies outside the Milky Way, he expanded the known universe by unimaginable scale.
His most famous contribution, now called Hubble’s Law, demonstrated that galaxies are moving away from one another, providing the first observational evidence that the universe is expanding. This insight laid the foundation for the Big Bang theory and permanently altered scientific views of space, time, and cosmic origins.
Hubble’s work did more than add data to astronomy; it changed humanity’s self-understanding. He replaced a small, static universe with one that is vast, dynamic, and evolving, reminding humanity that discovery often begins by questioning assumptions long taken for granted.
